In our previous blog, we explored the idea that knowledge can be bondage (ज्ञानं बंधनम). We discussed how knowledge, when misused, can create arrogance, stagnation, and a false sense of superiority, preventing us from learning further. Just like fire or electricity, knowledge can be both a boon and a curse—it depends entirely on how we use it.
However, there is another side to this truth. When knowledge is true, pure, and leads to wisdom, it becomes a source of ultimate freedom. This is the kind of knowledge that liberates us from ignorance, fear, and suffering.
The Geeta’s Wisdom on Knowledge and Freedom
Bhagavad Geeta beautifully explains how true knowledge leads to liberation. In Chapter 4, Verse 39, Lord Krishna says:
श्रद्धावान् लभते ज्ञानं तत्परः संयतेन्द्रियः।
ज्ञानं लब्ध्वा परां शान्तिमचिरेणाधिगच्छति॥
(Bhagavad Geeta 4.39)
Meaning:
A person with faith, dedication, and control over the senses attains knowledge. And with this knowledge, they quickly attain supreme peace and liberation.
This verse emphasizes that faith, sincerity, and self-discipline are essential to acquiring true knowledge. Once we achieve it, we experience inner peace and freedom—not just in a worldly sense, but at a deeper, spiritual level.
The Dual Nature of Knowledge
To understand this better, let’s take the example of fire and electricity.
Fire can cook food, provide warmth, and be a life-saving force. But it can also destroy homes and forests when uncontrolled.
Electricity powers our homes, runs industries, and drives progress, but misuse can cause shocks, accidents, and disasters.
Similarly, knowledge can be used for creation or destruction, enlightenment or ego, progress or downfall.
When Knowledge Becomes Bondage
Knowledge turns into bondage when:
✔️ It creates arrogance—"I know everything, I don’t need to learn anymore."
✔️ It stops growth—preventing us from exploring new perspectives.
✔️ It breeds comparison—leading to superiority or inferiority complexes.
✔️ It fosters division—when misused for selfish motives, manipulation, or control.
This is the "ज्ञानं बंधनम" aspect of knowledge. Instead of freeing us, it ties us down with false pride and ignorance.
When Knowledge Becomes Freedom
On the other hand, true knowledge leads to wisdom. It is not just about gathering information but about understanding life deeply. When knowledge is combined with humility, openness, and self-awareness, it becomes a force of liberation:
✔️ It removes fear—by showing us the truth about ourselves and the world.
✔️ It destroys ignorance—leading to clarity and enlightenment.
✔️ It creates inner peace—because we no longer chase illusions.
✔️ It connects us to the higher truth—giving us real freedom.
True Knowledge Transforms You
Lao Tzu once said, “Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom.” When we gain knowledge about the self, we become truly free.
This is why great sages, scientists, and thinkers remain lifelong learners. They understand that the more they know, the more there is to learn. True knowledge is humble, ever-expanding, and deeply liberating.
Conclusion: Embrace the Right Knowledge
The difference between knowledge as bondage and knowledge as freedom lies in our attitude and application. Ego-driven knowledge limits us, while wisdom-driven knowledge frees us.
As we continue our journey of learning, let us strive to gain knowledge that:
✅ Expands our minds,
✅ Removes false pride,
✅ Brings clarity,
✅ And ultimately, leads us to freedom.
Let’s embrace knowledge not just to be learned, but to be wise and free. Otherwise knowledge can become blockage as mentioned in previously blog.
